The Williams Lab, in conjunction with the Marine Mammal Physiology Project and UC Santa Cruz, offer several courses surrounding physiology, research methods, and animal care and training.  If you are interested in any of these courses, please visit UC Santa Cruz’s web site for current information or click on the links to the right.  Currently, these courses are only offered to enrolled students. For course availability, please go to the UCSC General Catalog.

There are numerous other courses in the biological sciences offered at UC Santa Cruz, covering a wide range of topics.  If you are interested, please check out the UCSC web site for additional information.

Education ~ UC Santa Cruz Courses Offered

animal physiology  BIOE 131

Principles and concepts underlying the function of tissues and organ systems in animals with emphasis on vertebrate systems.

animal physiology LAB  BIOE 131L

Experiments conducted with primary focus on quantitative physiological principles of organ systems and intact organisms.

exercise physiology  BIOE 133

An advanced-level course concerning physiological and biochemical processes associated with human performance. Emphasis is on the integration of organ systems for exercise. Topics include metabolism and fuel utilization, cardiovascular and respiratory dynamics during activity, and the effects of training. Requires a good understanding of basic physiological function and anatomy.

EXERCISE physiology LAB  BIOE 133L

An introduction to basic measurement techniques used in assessing the physiological response of humans to exercise. Sessions cover oxygen consumption, respiratory rate, and heart rate monitoring during aerobic and anaerobic activity.

animal care & training: theory and methods

This course is only available to current Marine Mammal Physiology Project Interns. The course covers a wide variety of topics in the realm of animal care and behavior modification. Psychological theory and terminology for behavior modification will be covered, as well as the most effective ways to implement these tools.
